Here's what I have learned this year:1. Watch out for junior boys. They act like 8th graders, but hit on 24 year old teachers like sloppy men.
2. Beware student teachers. Some will snag your time with chatter; some will become good friends; some will threaten to take a piece of your heart when they exit through the gift shop.
3. Build a fabulous support system. It is truly the only way you will make it.
4. Keep a stock of alcohol on hand. It is useful for so many purposes.
5. Forget politics. No one is really on your side.
6. Some students will steal your heart with their honest acts of kindness. Hold onto those moments for dear life. They are far and few between.
7. Forget about a social life. Forget about meeting people your own age. Be prepared to have some awkward encounters with parents and older colleagues.
8. Buy sleeping pills.
